Elf Male Character Portrait

Auðun of the Westfjords was a poor man working for his relative Þorstein. When the Northmen raided his home village in Wolgast he fled with the Captain Þórir and helped him on the ship. In return, Þórir granted Auðun passage, and Auðun made financial arrangements to support his mother for three years. Auðun travelled into Ursor where he met a hunter named Eirik and bought a polar bear from him with the remainder of his money. The hunter warned Auðun about spending his entire fortune on the bear, but Auðun did not heed his warning.

Auðun travelled with the Bear and was apprehended by War King Tlachcog of the Blood Reavers. The king asked if Auðun would sell or give him the bear, and Auðun says that he intends to give it as a gift to the Horse Lords, with whom the Tlachcog happens to be at war. Tlachcog chastises Auðun for wanting to give a gift to his enemy, but instead of harming Auðun, strangely grants him passage.

By the time Auðun crosses into Windlost, he runs out of provisions for himself and his bear, and a representative of the Horse Lords - a steward named Aki offers him help on the condition that he receives ownership of half the bear in return. Auðun is forced to accept and the two men seek audience with the Tewhirrus. The Horse Lord banishes Aki for interfering with Auðun's gift-giving, and invites Auðun to stay with him.

After some time, Auðun asks leave to go on pilgrimage to see the Kanchalka and maybe the Eagles. He is provided with money and other pilgrims to accompany him and is asked to return when he is done.

Auðun successfully completes his pilgrimage but becomes ill during his return. He arrives back in Windlost, bald and almost completely unrecognizable. People laugh at him, but the Horse Lord responds by saying that he has provided for his soul more than they have. He gives Auðun new clothes and offers him to stay as his cupbearer. Auðun replies he cannot stay and must return to Iceland, since the three-year period he set money aside to provide for his mother is nearly up. Upon parting, the king gives him a ship, a bag full of silver, and an arm ring, saying that he should only give the ring to a high-ranking person if he needs to repay a debt.

After departing, Auðun travels back to Wolgast and relates his experiences with the Tewhirr and Kanchalka, from his acceptance of the bear to funding his pilgrimage and hospitality. Auðun’s mother is impressed and explains that he should use the wealth he has acquired to build a new place far away from the Northmen and so he returns to the lands of Windlost and Taomist with a group of people from Wolgast to begin anew.
