Founded By:Tinkinator (Abandoned) Founded On:22OCT16 15:35

The Phalanx

Dedicated to the Illyriad military ascetic.

"We fight as a single, impenetrable unit. That is the source of our strength.
Each Spartan protects the man to his left from thigh to neck with his shield.
A single weak spot and the phalanx shatters."

King Leoneidas, 300

Discipline and coordination are the cornerstone of victory in this game. Every warrior in The Phalanx is dedicated to battle--every account is a troop building machine run by a determined, seasoned military player. Each of us is resolved to fight for the player next to us, and to be destroyed as a team if necessary.

The Phalanx is the next evolution in Illyriad combat: centrally planned, impeccably executed, and supported by cutting edge tools. It builds upon the superb tactics devised within The Hashashin [SIN], tactics which forever changed the face of Illyriad combat. The Phalanx advances these tactics in a team-focused environment where all warriors shoulder the burden of campaigns. Methodical in planning, relentless once unleashed, The Phalanx represents a new step forward on the ever-changing Illyriad battlefield.

Precepts:

  1. Two impenetrable alliance cores.
  2. All warriors and all cities build and deploy troops with full sovereignty.
  3. Coherent strategies planned by an experienced warrior team.
  4. Precision execution of plans by all warriors of The Phalanx.
  5. A disciplined Order of Battle that avoids hyper-specialization and over-extending.
  6. A focus on regional security, rather than projecting force over extreme distances.
  7. Cutting edge tools, from the minds that delivered Tinkdar and Dark Helmet.
  8. Wars declared thoughtfully, run methodically, and ended decisively upon attaining the objective.
  9. Engagement with the community via geo-politics and the new player-run tournaments.
  10. An alliance personality based on the ascetic ideal, rather than bravado.

A word from Ten Kulch:

There are many Illyriad players who would like to believe they are warriors. In truth, there are very few. Perhaps 1-2% of the entire player base is capable of attaining true military excellence. It isn't enough to have big armies and clean city placements. Real wars in Illyriad are fought over the course of several months, usually at considerable expense. Determination is the single most important factor to victory. After the first few weeks, it can feel exhausting, having to constantly monitor launch times and build armies. The team's endurance is what wins the military marathon.

I believe that discipline and teamwork are what create the team's endurance. The other founders of The Phalanx agree. We fought side-by-side for months during the SIN-Unbow war. Despite facing an opponent many times our size, eventually our discipline and teamwork prevailed, and the #12 alliance defeated the combined #1 and #4 alliances. We have a playbook of proven tactics and some impressive software tools. Unity remains the deciding factor.

There are many players who desire the prestige of joining a military alliance, more than they actually enjoy the fighting. Others crave the protection of powerful warriors. Some enjoy the momentary thrill of the opening volleys, only to fade quickly when the grind begins. Ultimately, all of these non-combatants begin to weigh on the core warriors. In many cases, frustration develops when social players are active in chat and city building, but fail in their duties as comrades. The Phalanx has a simple rule: no scrubs. We have tools like Slack to chat with our friends, but in times of peril, all members must fight at maximum capacity, no exceptions.

Players who join The Phalanx commit to a code of respect among comrades. We are the calmer heads in the Broken Lands, and our martial bonds will reflect that. Members must be ready to build troops in all cities, no exceptions. They must send those troops into battle with acceptable precision--not just a handful of times, but for dozens or hundreds of launches over the course of several months. Our players will locate cities in dense clusters to make defense easier, using the surround-by-plains strategy. All warriors will build a mix of offensive and defensive troops, so that no unlucky subset of players is forced to carry the high cost of regional security. While The Phalanx recognizes that it is sometimes necessary to confront hostile alliances over considerable distances, we also recognize that excessively prolonged warfare is a pointless burden on our players. Where opponents are unable to actually threaten the alliance core, alternatives to war declarations will be considered. Given the commitment of several months and considerable expense, any declaration of war will be issued methodically and then pursued with relentless ferocity. War is not an enterprise to be chanced lightly or administered casually.

To some degree, The Phalanx does intend to pursue regional power and prestige. Establishing bold goals is a risk, but it also keeps the game fresh, as The Hashashin proved with the Fellandire land claim. In exchange for the dedication of its warriors, the leadership team makes this promise: 1. your voices will always be heard, 2. the strategic objectives will always be carefully considered and thoroughly explained, 3. the battle plans will be cutting edge, and 4. we will be methodical in all things military.

Loyalty to each other; laser focus; endurance through discipline... and the rewards that follow.

Everyone fights. No one quits.
You don't do your job, I'll shoot you myself. Do you get me?"
