Skittish and Bashful [S&B]

Founded By:Hamsun Founded On:20FEB15 07:07

We have a lightfooted approach to growth: we want to be a mix of smaller, skittish towns, grown quickly and willing to exodus to where the scavenging is good or we can do fun things, and bigger, bashful towns that subsidise the adventures of their more agile comrades.

The POUM emblem
Land claims: 20 reserved square policy

Our alliance policy is that, besides the sovereignties claimed by each player and except for in the so-called 'newbie ring', we regard the 20 squares nearest neighbouring towns that can have sovs claimed on them as 'implicitly reserved': we treat them as if they were claimed by the town as sovs, except in the case that there are already two towns so close to the square.  We leave sovs alone, except by permission (player to player or by alliance treaty), or when sorely provoked.  Besides that, we don't recognise the land claims made on alliance profiles concerning 10 sq, 8 sq or 5 sq 'rules', and we do not oblige our members to place towns more than 2.83 sq from existing towns without asking for permission.

We don't mind other players settling/exodusing to any square that we haven't claimed a sov on. We claim the sovs we want pretty quickly.  If you want to exodus to within 10 sq of one of our towns, we should be willing to form a confederation with your alliance, on a temporary basis and perhaps even permanently.  Contact any player of rank Blue or higher (see next section), all of whom should have the power to form and dissolve confederations.  If you want to forbid us from violating your alliance's 10 sq rule, or similar, the right way to do this is to form a treaty with us.  Again, contact a player of rank Blue or higher.

If we can't get alongside each other peacefully, we are pretty easy about relocating or kicking our more troublesome members out.  Just say, and probably we'll be willing to move on if it's clear we are bad for you, and if possible this can be arranged quickly: it might take minutes after we read your complaint, though we may want a few weeks if we are in the middle of something (e.g., involving armies or traders).  Contact any player with chat access (players with a clearance rank of Yellow or higher, see below) with your request.

Alliance activity

We are an unusual alliance in many ways.  We don't offer much in the way of direct mutual protection, although we do have many friends in bigger alliances who we hope we can count on in a crisis.  Our members are strong in trade, crafting and terraforming and have war experience from their other accounts.  Our members have fun, but we are serious players who want to test the limits of the game.  If that sounds like you, consider having an account of yours join us!

With respect to self-defence, we have a Loki-like "sort out your own messes" philosophy; unlike Loki, our attitude to having a war declared on us is to resolve things by diplomacy or maybe encourage individual players to drum up their friends from other alliances to form a posse and sort it out militarily. Our alliance leadership will not demand that all the alliance members fight together as one, nor will our leadership plead as an alliance to our confederates that they should rescue us.

Who should I get in touch with?

At the moment of writing, the alliance is just taking shape and there are more roles than players to fill those roles.  There is a larger group of players involved with setting up the infrastructure of the alliance, which is based on a colour-coded framework like the clearance levels in the Paranoia role-playing game, with an Orwellian twist.

The most important clearances are divided into two classes: The Outer Party (clearance Yellow and clearance Green) have chat access, with clearance yellow for new recruits and Greens getting troubleshooting powers, principally the power to recruit and form NAPs; and The Inner Party of the highly trusted (clearances are Blue, Indigo, and Violet), who can all form confederations and declare war.  Any player can kick out players of lower clearance. Players of clearance Violet are the top brass and can edit this page; players with the next clearance, Indigo, normally have the ability to assign players to other ranks, and so can easily mount a coup.  And there are other, more unusual roles outside the inner and outer party.

So get in touch with whoever you think has high enough clearance to solve your problem, or ask anybody with clearance yellow or above to raise your problem on our alliance chat.  Do contact several of us at once if the matter is at all urgent.
